Sir Henry Wellcome Gold Medal

This award recognises outstanding achievement and leadership in pharmacology and therapeutics. The winner will receive a medal and £2,000.

Background

The Gold Medal was established in 1979 with a grant from Glaxo Wellcome (GlaxoSmithKline). The medal, featuring an image of Sir Henry Wellcome, was sculpted by Sir John Mills. GlaxoSmithKline continued its support, until 2015, when the Council of the Society agreed to fund the award. The Wellcome name was retained as it was considered that the medal commemorated Sir Henry Wellcome, rather than his original company. In 2023, to strengthen this association, the Society has renamed the award, the 'Sir Henry Wellcome Gold Medal'.

Criteria

• Contribution to research, including drug discovery and development
• Patient and / or public engagement
• Scientific impact, such as contributions to education and training
• Other significant contributions, including research and development leadership

Eligibility

• Candidates do not need to be members
• Self-nomination is encouraged but members are required to nominate non-members
• The Society is committed to increasing the diversity of its award recipients. Excellent candidates are encouraged to apply, especially those from under-represented groups

Applications

• Supporting statement outlining contributions. 
• If applicable, a list of up to 20 of the candidate’s publications, including details of citations and, if possible, indication of the h-index. A summary of the impact of the publications should also be included.
